🔴 Subordinator –
Let’s discuss about the Clause first. सर्वप्रथम उपवाक्य बाबत चर्चा करू.
Clause :-
Clause is group of words that has a Subject and a Verb and is a part of a larger sentence. ज्या शब्दसमूहात Subject व Verb असते व तो एक मोठ्या वाक्याचा भाग असतो त्याला Clause असे म्हणतात.

⬛ When he asks the nurse, she tells him their story.

There are two clauses. वरील वाक्यात दोन Clause आहेत.
1st Clause – When he asks the nurse
2nd Clause – she tells him their story

‘she tells him their story’ This clause makes complete sense. So it is called Main / Principal Clause. या वाक्यांशातून पूर्ण अर्थबोध
होतो. त्यासाठी इतर वाक्याचा संदर्भ घ्यावा लागत नाही. म्हणून त्याला Main Clause / Principal Clause असे म्हणतात.

‘When he asks the nurse’ This clause is not complete by itself. It depends on the main clause to convey a proper sense. So it is called Dependent or Subordinate Clause. या वाक्यांशाचा अर्थ स्पष्ट होत नाही. त्याचा अर्थ समजण्यासाठी त्या दुसऱ्या वाक्यावर अवलंबून रहावे लागते. म्हणून त्याला Dependent / Subordinate Clause असे म्हणतात.

‘When‘ is a joining word and it is called a Subordinator. ‘When’ हा जोडणारा शब्द आहे म्हणून त्याला Subordinator असे म्हणतात.

🔴 Examples :-
⬛ They have shown that war has not shaken their spirit.

There are two clauses वरील वाक्यात दोन Clause आहेत.
1st Clause – They have shown
2nd Clause – that war has not shaken their spirit

‘They have shown’ This clause makes complete sense. So it is  Main / Principal Clause.  या  वाक्यांशातून पूर्ण अर्थबोध
होतो. त्यासाठी इतर वाक्याचा संदर्भ घ्यावा लागत नाही. म्हणून  तो  Main Clause / Principal Clause आहे.

🟢 ‘that’ is a joining word and it is called a Subordinator. ‘that’ हा जोडणारा शब्द आहे म्हणून त्याला Subordinator असे म्हणतात.

⬛  They pay for their sister’s treatment, who suffers from tuberculosis.

There are two clauses वरील वाक्यात दोन Clause आहेत.
1st Clause – They pay for their sister’s treatment
2nd Clause – who suffers from tuberculosis

‘They pay for their sister’s treatment’ This clause makes complete sense. So it is called Main / Principal Clause. या  वाक्यांशातून पूर्ण अर्थबोध होतो. त्यासाठी इतर वाक्याचा संदर्भ घ्यावा लागत नाही. म्हणून  तो  Main Clause / Principal Clause आहे.

‘who suffers from tuberculosis’ This  is not complete by itself. It depends on the main clause to convey a proper sense. So it is called Dependent or Subordinate Clause.  या वाक्यांशाचा पूर्ण  अर्थबोध होत नाही. त्याचा अर्थ समजण्यासाठी त्या दुसऱ्या वाक्यावर अवलंबून रहावे लागते. म्हणून तो Dependent / Subordinate Clause आहे.
